Major fire strikes downtown Boston.

The fire, which breaks out on Duane Street, destroys 53 businesses along State, Broad, Batterymarch, Central, and Kilby streets. Firefighters are hampered in fighting the fire by the lack of an adequate supply of water, which prompts the city to appoint a committee to identify new sources of water.
